What are peptides?
Peptides are chains of amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins in the skin. When peptides form a long chain of amino acids, they become proteins. When they are in a short chain of amino acids, they are able to penetrate the top layer of our skin and send signals to our cells to let them know how to function.

Peptides are found in many effective anti-aging skin care products. While there is no singular, miracle ingredient that will give you those instant, youthful results we all wish for, peptides are an extremely important ingredient to look for in your wrinkle fighting creams, serums, and under eye products.
The most infamous protein naturally found in the skin that diminishes naturally as we age, is collagen. Making up 75% of our skin, collagen is responsible for maintaining that thick, supple, taut appearance. As such it is such a large molecule, collagen cannot not penetrate the skin when applied to the skin in the form of a cream or serum, making peptides a great alternative. Peptides are blessed with the ability to signal cells to make more collagen and repair damaged cell structures.

Acetyl Hexapeptide-8
Acetyl hexapeptide 8, which is also known as Argireline, is a peptide compound that is used in skin care products to reduce the appearance of wrinkles brought on by repeated facial expressions. When it comes to fine lines and wrinkles on the face, especially around the eyes and mouth; they usually form because of repeated facial expressions, such as smiling, frowning, or furrowing the brow in deep concentration or frustration. When people make these expressions, the face contorts based on the contraction of the muscles beneath the skin. Acetyl hexapeptide 8 can temporarily get rid of wrinkles by intercepting messages from the brain, thereby preventing muscle contractions. If you’re considering ways to remove wrinkles, such as frown and laugh lines, then this peptide may be an option for you, though it is not likely to eliminate deep forehead wrinkles or other significantly pronounced lines. Although acetyl hexapeptide-8 is thought to be generally safe, keep in mind that when using products with this chemical, you should start slowly, as you may temporarily create unnatural face expressions if you do not use the products correctly.

Tripeptide-1
Also known by the acronym “GHK” for the amino acids that comprise it (glycine, histidine, and lysine), tripeptide-1 is a synthetic signal peptide known to work with copper in skin to visibly repair substances that have begun to deteriorate due to age and sun exposure. Tripeptide 1 is responsible for promoting the production of fibroblasts. The role of the fibroblast is to create an extracellular matrix along with collagen. They are considered to the primary connective tissue cells structures within the body. Collagen is a protein that exists within the human body and it is responsible for “holding the body together”. Collagen can be found in the bones, inside of the skin, muscles, and tendons. The function of the protein is to give the body its form. Tripeptide 1, which encourages the development of fibroblasts promotes new cell growth while stimulating the production of collagen in the body. The compound plays an important role in anti-aging science and has been used in a number of products. As a member of the peptide family, it contains 3 amino acids and is fused together by a peptide bond.

Products that contain Tripeptide 1 have been shown to offer increased benefits for the skin. In anti-aging products, the ingredient has been found to combat free-radicals and moisturize the skin. It functions to stimulate collagen, giving the skin a firmer appearance. In addition to promoting collagen production, the ingredient when used in formulas has been found to improve the overall appearance and health of the skin, slowing down the signs of aging.

Tripeptide-10 Citrulline
Tripeptide-10 Citrulline is a new cosmetic active, designed as a substitute of decorin, that specifically targets collagen fiber organization to regulate collagen fibrillogenesis. Tripeptide-10 Citrulline ensures uniformity in fibril diameter and increases skin suppleness. Due to its good cohesion of collagen fibers, Tripeptide-10 Citrulline is widely used in anti-aging cosmetic products.

The regulation of collagen fibers is controlled by a number of molecules one of which is called decorin. As we get older, decorin activity declines. The new peptide, tripeptide-10 citrulline, is supposed to mimic decorin so that the collagen fibers are fooled into thinking they should still be productive.

A trial was conducted on 43 women, about half of which were given tripeptide-10 citrulline. Granted this was conducted by the manufacturer, Lipotec. Nevertheless, the results (published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science) aren’t bad with 54% showing an increase in skin suppleness. Over a two-month period, it was shown to make the fibers more uniform

Ubiquinone 50
Ubiquinol-50 is a superior form of CoQ10 providing improved assimilation and use in the human body. The body for many reasons can lose or exhibit reduced capacity to convert ubiquinone into ubiquinol (the predominant, reduced form of CoQ10 found in the body). Taking ubiquinol supplements bypasses the body’s need for converting ubiquinone, thereby making the health benefits of CoQ10 available to the entire body. Ubiquinol-50 provides 50 mg of reduced form Coenzyme Q10. Ubiquinone 50 also known as coenzyme Q10, it is a vitamin-like, fat-soluble substance naturally presenting in the body. Applied to skin, it can have antioxidant benefits due to its energizing effect on factors in skin that tend to slow down with age and cumulative sun exposure.

Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
The antioxidant properties of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and its role in collagen synthesis make vitamin C a vital molecule for skin health. Dietary and topical ascorbic acid have beneficial effects on skin cells, and some studies have shown that vitamin C may help prevent and treat ultraviolet (UV)-induced photodamage. However, the effects of vitamin C in the skin are not well understood due to limited research. This article discusses the potential roles of vitamin C in the skin and summarizes the current knowledge about vitamin C in skin health.

Vitamin C is a normal skin constituent that is found at high levels in both the dermis and epidermis. The vitamin C content of the epidermis is higher than the dermis, although the vitamin C concentrations in both layers are approximately equal to that of other water-soluble antioxidants, including uric acid and glutathione Aging, however, causes a decline in vitamin C content in both the epidermis and dermis. Excessive exposures to UV light or pollutants (e.g., cigarette smoke and ozone) may also lower vitamin C content, primarily in the epidermis.

Vitamin C in the skin is normally transported from the bloodstream. Transport proteins specific for ascorbic acid are found on cells in all layers of the skin. Keratinocytes have a high capacity for vitamin C transport, possibly to compensate for limited vascularization of the epidermis Oral supplementation with vitamin C effectively increases vitamin C levels in the skin. However, when plasma vitamin C levels are saturated, skin vitamin C concentrations no longer increase. Optimum skin concentrations of the vitamin are not yet known.

Squalane
It balances oil production, providing just enough moisture to keep the skin clear and healthy. Squalane oil also has powerful anti-aging properties and will help the skin age gracefully as well as anti-inflammatory benefits to help with skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

Squalene and squalane are used in skincare products as a highly-effective emollient and natural antioxidant. Historically, they’ve been used in the medical field to treat wounds and skin problems
